Decarbonisation story

TLEA is committed to reducing our total carbon footprint — not just in the manufacturing process, but throughout our entire supply chain. By choosing to refine locally instead of exporting the raw product, we have been able to significantly reduce our transport emissions. Running our calciner on gas, instead of coal, has significantly assisted our decarbonisation efforts, and we’re currently pursuing improvements in operational efficiency that will allow us to reduce the use of gas even further. And by finding new markets for our non-lithium products, we’re helping to reduce further emissions from what would otherwise come from the new production of these products. Every tonne of TAS used to replace cement saves one tonne of carbon emissions.

Zero waste

By employing leading circular economy best practices, we are working towards becoming a waste-free facility. To achieve this, we have found beneficial uses for the non-lithium products we manufacture, as well as lithium hydroxide. We produce three non-lithium products from the spodumene we mine: Tianqi aluminosilicate (TAS), gyplime, and sodium sulphate. Finding markets for these products ensures we derive the maximum benefit from the non-renewable spodumene resource. With every tonne of lithium hydroxide, we produce approximately 10 tonnes of these non-lithium products. The most significant is TAS, at a ratio of about eight to one. Without beneficial uses, these materials will end up in landfill, which isn’t just costly, but works against our carbon reduction efforts. Finding markets for these products not only makes business sense, it also helps us reduce waste – which is the right thing to do.
