In February 2023, six young school leavers took their first steps on a two-year journey to cement their future as skilled technicians in Australia’s lithium hydroxide processing industry.
Four have now successfully completed their inhouse traineeship production technicians while the other two will join the laboratory team at Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia’s (TLEA) Kwinana plant.
A formal graduation ceremony was held on Thursday 21 November 2022 in front of their parents, friends, TLEA mentors and trainers.

Another eight young people are working toward their four-year mechanical and electrical engineering apprenticeships.
TLEA’s Apprentice & Trainee Program is embedded in the company’s workforce strategy, which focuses on professional development, skill-building, and community investment.
Launched in 2022, the Apprentice & Trainee Program, marks a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to fostering a legacy of success through nurturing local talent.
It aims to provide young talent with practical industry skills, and the technical knowledge necessary for careers in the growing lithium processing sector.

“It is a legacy we believe in fostering, not only through our successful operations but through the opportunities we provide to the people driving that work – people like each of you here today,” CEO Raj Surendran said at the graduation ceremony. “
“For some of you, this journey began right out of high school, and stepping from school corridors to our production floors is no easy transition.
“Being part of the lithium industry right now is like joining a story that’s just beginning. It’s dynamic, innovative, and challenging, and it’s going to need each of you to bring your best every day.”
